the heart of prayer

Jesus went out in the morning to a solitary place, and He would go at night to the Mount of Olives. The key to turning a sporadic and spontaneous approach to prayer into a sustainable transformational routine is often to develop a quiet time in a place you can regularly meet.

This week:

  1. Choose a place you will go to each day to meet with the Lord. If you already have one you don’t have to invent a new place. But if the place you have been meeting with God isn’t ideal, you can use this time to choose a new place. It can be outdoors, it can be in the basement, it can be in a favorite chair or under an apron.
  2. Choose a time you will go each day to meet with the Lord. It can be in the evening or in the morning or at lunch or at 2:53p. Simply set that appointment on your calendar to be with the Lord.
  3. Read aloud the prayer that Jesus taught us and then ask Him to teach you how to pray.

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be Your name,

Your kingdom come,

Your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”
